Dutch plant production is moving into a situation where the use of chemical crop protection agents is becoming increasingly difficult.
Despite years of efforts reducing the environmental impact of crop protection, managed in covenants between the Dutch government and agricultural sectors, progress is too slow. EU regulations and reducing societal appreciation/understanding of pesticides use are creating an unworkable situation for farmers.
I believe that the agricultural sector can turn tables if it takes the initiative in setting up an environmental management system for responsible crop protection. I presented this idea June 2026 at the Foodlog meeting.
